Week beginning 1st September
Our learning next week
Maths
We will be starting a four-week unit on Place Value. The focus will be on:
I can represent numbers to 10,000.
I can partition numbers to 10,000.
I can use flexible partitioning for numbers to 10,000.
I can find 1, 10, 100, 1,000 more or less than a given number.
I can place numbers on a number line to 10,000.
Times tables
As you may be aware, in May / June each year, all the children attending an English school complete a multiplication assessment to check that their knowledge of the multiplication tables, up to 12 x 12, is secure. The expectation is that all children will know all the tables up to and including their 12 times tables.
We complete a lot of work at school to support the children’s multiplication knowledge, but it is really important that they also practice their tables outside of school. The below link is a really useful online resource that supports children to practice their knowledge and also identifies which tables they may need to practise. The link mirrors the assessment that they will complete in their final term of Year 4.
I have found the most effective strategy to be ‘little and often’ to support them to secure this key area of learning.

English
Linked to our Roman’s theme, in English we will be continue to analyse recounts using Escape from Pompeii as the text. The learning objectives will be:
I can summarise the key points in the text and analyse the plot structure.
I can explore a character.
I can find and create fronted adverbials for where and when.
I can plan a shared recount.
VIPERS: the focus will be on retrieval.
Reading
The expectation is that all children will read for 20/30 minutes per night – alongside their parents. Please use the Vipers questions at the start of the reading diary to engage with the text. Once you have read together, please comment on the reading and sign the diary. This should be done every night. Also, please use the grid at the back of the book to record each day of reading. These accumulate and lead to rewards.
Thank you to those children who are answering the questions in the reading diaries. Please ensure that the questions are discussed and answered.
Spelling
This week we are focussing on words with the suffix -sion
PE – Monday and Wednesday – please come to school in your PE kit. You will remain in your PE all day.
Library – Wednesday
I wish you all a great weekend!

Week beginning 1st September
Welcome back to Term 1! The children have settled brilliantly into both Gibbon and Woodpecker Class, becoming familiar with the expectations, and getting to know one another. They have enjoyed a really positive start to the term and have made both Mr Crichton and Mrs Jenkins very happy teachers as a result of their great manners and enthusiasm!
Please find some information below about our learning for the next week, beginning on Monday 1st of September:
Maths
We will be starting a four-week unit on Place Value. The focus will be on:
I can represent numbers to 1,000.
I can partition numbers to 1,000.
I can place numbers on a number line to 1,000.
I can explore numbers beyond 1,000.
I can represent numbers to 10,000.
Times tables.
By the end of Year 4, children need to have secure recall of the multiplication tables up to 12 x 12. Please help your child to secure this knowledge by regularly practicing each times table. We really do recommend a ‘little but often’ approach to learning multiplication tables, regularly practising for a few minutes each day to secure knowledge
English
Linked to our Roman’s topic, in English we will be starting a four-week unit on Recounts. A recount is an oral account or piece of writing that retells events that have already occurred.
Our learning objectives for our English lessons will be:
I can identify that information is presented via a recount.
I can use active reading strategies (KWL grid) to understand a text.
I can generate and answer questions with reference to the text.
I can analyse and identify the features of a recount.
I can create a storyboard for Escape from Pompeii.
VIPERS
To support our knowledge and understanding in reading, we participate in a lesson called VIPERS. VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum. They are the key areas which we feel children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts.
VIPERS stands for:
Vocabulary
Inference
Prediction
Explanation
Retrieval
Sequence or Summarise
Over the next week, our focus in these lessons will be developing our vocabulary.
Reading Outside of School
Becoming a confident reader is key to success and so we ask that every child reads on a daily basis with an adult. Ideally, this is for a period of between 20 and 30 minutes per night.
At the front of your child’s reading diary, there are some questions that you can use that reflect our Vipers curriculum and may help you and your child to really understand what they are reading. Once you have read with your child, please comment on the reading and sign the diary. We also ask that you complete the grid at the back of the book to record each day of reading. This is because we reward regular reading to encourage children to really focus on this key area of learning and the signatures at the back of the diary accumulate and lead to rewards.
Spelling
This week, we will be exploring words ending in the suffix ‘sion’ as part of our spelling work.
PE
Our PE lessons will be held on a Monday and a Wednesday – on these days, children should wear their PE kit for the whole day.
Library
Our library day is Wednesday. On Wednesday, we will visit the library to select a reading book of our choice, supporting our reading for pleasure.
I wish everyone a wonderful weekend and look forward to the week ahead!
